Stand with Love Volunteers

at Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve

The UUCSC Stand with Love volunteers participated in an event at the Sepulveda Basin  Wildlife Reserve in Los Angeles with Friends of the LA River organized by Jacki Weber for  Earth Day April 22, 2024.

"Stand with Love" volunteers make a remarkable impact on the environment. By pulling  invasive plants, they actively reduce carbon emissions, which benefits our planet.  Additionally, this practice improves soil health, creating a nurturing foundation for plant  growth. When "Stand with Love" volunteers focus on restoring native habitats, they play a  vital role in enhancing biodiversity—a beautiful gift to Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve.

Our efforts are helping to protect native ecosystems! A goal of "Habitat Restore & Renew"  was to pull by the roots the invasive black mustard flowering plant. Preventing the mustard  seeds from developing reduces their impact on the precious environment and clearing the  way for sunlight to reach non-invasive native plants including the mulefat blooming shrub, which contributes to overall biodiversity and ecological health, and the coyote bush which  provides ecological balance are both natural to the wildlife reserve.

As we pulled mustard flowers and weeds from the area, two adult geese and their goslings  ventured from the lake.

Tables were set-up for the volunteers to learn about the composition and technique in  making mud seed balls. Seed balls are round formed balls made from clay, compost, seed,  and sometimes sand. In Japan the practice is known as "Tsuchi Dango" or "Earth Dumpling,"  involves mixing seeds with compost or humus and rolling them into clay balls” Volunteers  of all ages could make their own seed balls or take prepared seed balls from the tables.

UUCSC volunteers at this event included Jacki Weber, James Sciullo, Stephanie Beach,  Georgia Brewer, Jackie Davis, Damian Davis, Atlas Davis, Barbara Allen, Bonnie Pierone, and  others. Members of other Unitarian Universalist churches also participated.
