Small Group Ministry

The UU Church of Studio City’s small group ministry program is called Chalice Circles.

Church members are trained to be volunteer Facilitators. A Chalice Circle is a spiritual practice group of about ten people led by a Facilitator that meets for 1.5 hours once a month at the church. Programs run for eight months from October through May, and registration is usually in August or September. However, newcomers are welcome to join mid-year, space allowing.

A Chalice Circle evening includes readings, a chalice lighting by the facilitator, and a personal check-in. Then the majority of time is devoted to thoughtful sharing and discussion around the current monthly worship theme.

Monthly worship themes for September – June are based on our UU Soul Matters Sharing Circle membership. The themes for congregational year 2017 – 2018 are:

September Welcome February Perseverance
October Courage March Balance
November Abundance April Emergence
December Hope May Creativity
January Intention June Blessing

Soul Matters also provides additional content, such as centering questions, for small group ministries that are synchronized with the monthly theme. You have the opportunity to explore these questions in a UUCSC Chalice Circle.

Chalice Circles are an excellent opportunity for exploring spiritual themes in more depth, using the compelling questions provided in both worship and a small group settings. The activity of deep listening is practiced and shared with attention and care.

This program is most successful when participants prioritize attendance month to month, allowing trust and camaraderie to develop. Chalice Circles strive to create the conditions for moments of grace and connection.
