Minister and Staff
Rev. Hannah Petrie
The Rev. Hannah Petrie serves UUCSC full-time as our settled Minister. She is a lifelong UU and was affirmed and ordained at North Shore Unitarian Church in Deerfield, IL. A Centennial graduate of Starr King School for the Ministry in 2004, she has served full time at UU churches in locations including Austin, TX, southwest FL, the Detroit area and Pasadena, CA.
In addition to her two children, son Pender and daughter Ada Lou, Rev. Hannah’s passions include community organizing, studying history and spirituality, hiking, music, writing, and nurturing her many friendships.
Rev. Hannah is enthusiastic about preaching, working on organizational development, and leading our congregation’s community in shared ministry.
Rev. Dr. Jay Atkinson
The Reverend Dr. Jay Atkinson was settled as our minister in September 1999 and served for twelve years until his retirement in June 2011. He holds an A.M. in Divinity from the University of Chicago and a Doctorate in Ministry from Meadville Lombard Theological School. Before coming to UUCSC, he served UU churches in Sioux City, Iowa, and Davis, California. He also did research in nuclear physics for eleven years. He lives with his wife, Ariel Summerlin, near Berkeley, where he studies UU history and theology as Research Scholar at Starr King School for the Ministry. He still preaches occasionally and leads tours to historic Polish Brethren sites in southern Poland.
Dr. Jason Taksony Hewitt
Director of Religious Exploration
Jason is a Unitarian Universalist, a member of the UU Buddhist Fellowship, and a dedicated life-long learner. He is continuing his studies of religious history and interfaith spiritual formation at the Claremont School of Theology. A strong advocate of interfaith dialogue and community building, Jason has worked to promote these in several communities. Originally from North Carolina, Jason grew up in Worcester, Massachusetts, where he first encountered the UU community. He has lived in Boulder, Colorado and in various parts of California while learning meditation and studying ecological spirituality in the Buddhist, Muslim, and Christian traditions. Jason currently lives in North Hollywood with his husband Sean and their three dogs and two cats. Together, Sean and Jason enjoy exploring life as fanboys, sharing their obsession for all things related to science fiction and fantasy.
Nancy Holland delights in leading the choir at UUCSC. She holds a doctorate in Choral Music from USC’s Thornton School of Music, sings with the Donald Brinegar Singers, and is the Assistant Conductor of the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory Chorus.
Before coming to UUCSC, Nancy conducted in churches and schools and community choirs in Pasadena, CA, Palos Verdes, CA, and Belmont, MA. She led choirs to South Africa, Latvia, Estonia, Cuba, and Transylvania, and taught English and Music at Chadwick School in Palos Verdes, CA, Middlesex School in Lowell, MA, the Renaissance Academy in Eagle Rock, CA, and Hawaii Preparatory Academy in Kamuela, HI.
Nancy also holds degrees from Swarthmore College, Stanford University, Middlebury College, New England Conservatory, and the Royal Academy of Music. She enjoys hiking, skiing, yoga, and Pilates. Her husband Jim teaches English at the Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena.
Stan was born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles, where he completed his education. He is proud to be a Bruin, graduating from UCLA with a BS degree in Construction Management. Stan was introduced to the church over 40 years ago by his wife Donna Mae, and has been a member for over 25 years. His 30-year career in the savings and loan industry has made him a valued contributor on numerous committees, including as chairman of several. Previously, Stan was treasurer for six years on the Board of Trustees, and in June of 2014 was honored to receive the UUCSC Service Award. Currently he serves as an elected member of the Endowment Committee and has been on the Leadership team as Facility Manager since 2011.
Claudia has over 22 years of office management experience in organizations ranging from Northridge Hospital’s Spiritual Care Department, St. Elisabeth Church & The Rogationist Father of The Heart of Jesus, in Van Nuys, to LA Valley College’s Distance Education Student Help Desk. She holds certificates in Graphic and Web design, Associate degree in History, Sociology , Sociology Social Welfare, Computer Application Specialist, and Administrative Assistant from Los Angeles Valley College. She is currently working on a BA in Social Work at California State University, Los Angeles.
