Announcements From Our DRE

Dear UUCSC Friends,

Have you considered going to Camp DeBenneville Pines this summer? It is a fantastic place of UU identity, natural beauty and community building. Out in the mountains near Big Bear, this camp is the home of thousands of trees and animals and is a gorgeous place to get awa from the city for a while. It's also the perfect place to meet more UUs from the area than you ever knew existed. I remember thinking, "Wow! Look at all these amazing, like-minded people. I am so lucky to be here!" I would love for everyone to experience it yourself, so please talk to me, visit the bulletin board in the Narthex or visit their website: www.debenneville.org to register.

If you'd like to be part of UUCSC's religious exploration vision, we always have opportunities for you to pass on your stories, lessons, wisdom and passions with our church children. In particular, we have a storytelling crew, teaching team opportunities, committee member openings to plan events and more. Have an idea? Let's talk about it and make it happen!

Summer schedule goes from June 27th - September 5th, with regular classes starting back again September 12th. We have one large class of all children in Kindergarten and higher with Sylvia Nichols. Youth 6th grade and up are encouraged to join Sylvia’s class or remain in the adult service. Rainbow and Toddler Room classes will go on as usual.

To make all of this happen and still give our hardworking teachers a break, we need two additional parent/member volunteers per Sunday. Please sign up in the Narthex or talk to me if you would like to help out. A tremendous thank you goes to the RE committee and team:

RE Chairs: Tony Soltis and Stacie Foster for all the work as RE chairs, keeping our RE committee for children and youth going strong this year.

Program Assistants: Maggie Hatfield, Bonnie Pierone and Jenny Ashe have been outstanding RE program assistants, helping with events, after-church snacks, assistant teaching and so much more. We are so grateful to have you all involved in our program.

RE Teachers: Star Irvine taught a very fun class with our littlest ones and we appreciate her service! Nicole Thibadeaux started out in the Big Room and shifted to the Toddler Room, bringing all of her enthusiasm and genius to the task. Sylvia Nichols is in her third decade of teaching our K-2nd graders and this class comes alive with the flora and fauna of our Earth. Jill Herbertson has the perfect combination of imagination, education and inspiration and she brings each of these traits into every Sunday school lesson with our 3rd-5th graders. Wendy Hawker has brought her knack for the dramatic to her curriculum this year by doing the amazing SUUper Plays to illuminate our principles and purposes with our middle schoolers. Erica Steakley and Olivia Dudek truly stepped up to the plate this year to restart our high school class, from an empty meeting room to a teeming classroom of a truly beautiful community.

Storytelling crew: Susanne Malles, Russ Balisok, Marc Labinger, Olivia Dudek, Wendy Hawker, Jill Herberston, Clay Steakley and Tony Soltis for the enlightening, delightful children’s time stories, Sunday after Sunday.

I am delighted to have the opportunity to attend General Assembly, be an adult advisor at DeBenneville youth camp, and also have some vacation time this summer. The end result is that you won’t see me around for most Sundays from the end of June into early August, but I will always be just an email or phone call away! This congregation is very dear to my heart and I wish everyone a happy, safe and spiritual summer!
