Religious Exploration

Teachers in our Religious Exploration program

What makes a religion a religion..? And how do we explore it?

While it is common to define Religion as Belief or Worship, we also explore the essence of Religion within Ethics, Story, Self Reflection, Tradition, and Sacred Time and Place.

At every age level we share these program goals:

  • Explore Ethics and Philosophy.
  • Compare and Survey World Religions, great and small.
  • Create Building Blocks for a Personal Theology.
  • Develop a Unitarian Universalist Identity.

From the Director of Religious Education:
We are winding down the Sunday School year. Our last regular classes will be June 17. And then we move into our summer schedule, with an informal curriculum exploring the theme: "Water."

We will have fun water activities on the playground, stories about water, shells and fossils from the sea. We'll make some ice cream with the help of water in it's solid form. We'll consider how much water we use each day and learn about people who can't just turn on a tap when they are thirsty, but instead have to carry water for miles from a stream or well. It'll be something different each Sunday.

The Big Room will be open and supervised for 3rd graders through teens.

Preschool through 2nd graders will meet in their regular classrooms or on the playground.
We'd like to encourage families to sign up by May 27 for summer camp at DeBenneville in July. This is such a great way for our youth to make connections with the wider population of Unitarian Universalists in SoCal. Such a wonderful way to foster a Unitarian Universalist identity. more info here: http://www.uucamp.org/

June 10 will include a special ceremony for our teens who are bridging into adulthood. We are so very proud of these young adults, whom we have watched grow into such lovely people. Please join us as we wish them well in this next step in life's journey.

June 17 is the day we say a big thank you to our volunteer teachers...the people who make our Religious Exploration program possible.

And June 17 is also Father's Day...and Rev Mike's last Sunday with us, so we will be celebrating and saying farewell with a picnic after the church service at Beeman Park...we are still pulling together the details, but we're thinking old school games like badminton or croquet...or three-legged races, duck duck goose, and red rover. We hope you will join us to kick off the summer!

Finally, my thanks for all the kindness and support you have given me since I stepped in a year ago as your Director of Religious Exploration. With a year's experience under my belt, I look forward to working with all of you to create a great children's program for next year.
