Pledge Drive—Canvassing Starts April 1, 2012!
We’ll contact you to set up a time to talk with you about pledging for the new church year.
Pledging Testimony: Vickie Vining
I’m Vickie Vining, your Vice President on the Board of Trustees. I’m also on the Pledge Drive Committee. Our annual pledge drive is coming up in April and I’m the first of a series of people who will be giving you some things to think about as it gets closer.
This year we will be doing canvassing. That’s where members of the church will come and talk with you about supporting your church. We’ll also be talking with you about how the church supports you and ways in which it could support you better.
Talking about money can be uncomfortable to some people. But your church family is like any other family. In order to thrive and to do what we’re here to do, we need to talk openly and honestly about what it takes financially to sustain the church.
I grew up in a fundamentalist church where we tithed 10% of our income every year. Although my family was far from well off, our church contribution was not an optional expense. It was right up there with keeping a roof over our heads and food on the table. The church was critical to our well-being and an intrical part of our everyday lives. That’s true for me with this church.
Like a lot of people, I’ve been hit pretty hard by the economic down turn. My income is less than half what it was a few years ago. But my pledge has not gone down—in fact it’s increased. I’ve given up many other things like cable TV and recreational shopping. I figure I can live without another Kardashian wedding, but I’m can’t imagine my life without this church. I also cannot imagine coming here and not giving as much as I can to keep it going.
The budget committee met for four hours this past week. We considered all the requests for funding that came with a wide range of inspiring and exciting projects that the various committees and groups want to do. We got to glimpse what next year could be if we all step up to the plate (the offering plate that is) and give until the vision of a vital and dynamic church is a reality.
I know we can make it happen- happily and enthusiastically because that’s how we do things in this church. So why shouldn’t we do pledging the same over the top way we do other things.
So when you’re asked to schedule your canvassing visit and when you’re asked to pledge, say YES! YES! to giving your fair share and YES! to contributing to one of the most amazing years this church has ever seen.
